Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series V8 diesel to end production March 2021

The countdown has begun for the Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series V8 diesel. The last example is due to roll off the production line in March 2021 to make way for the next generation.

Fans who want to secure one of the last examples of the Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series V8 turbo diesel will need to get a move on.

The Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series V8 turbo diesel is approaching the end of the production line, with the last batch due to be built in March 2021.

Toyota dealers have been asked to stock up and place their final orders after being advised production of the LandCruiser 200 Series will come to an end after 14 years, making it the longest-running LandCruiser wagon since the 1960s.

Toyota dealers have also been advised there will be a limited edition Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series available in the first half of next year.

Once the 200 Series goes out of production, the assembly line with be transformed in preparation for the next-generation Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series.

Toyota remains tight-lipped about the Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series, however CarAdvice understands it is due to go into production in the middle of 2021 before arriving in showrooms in the second half of next year.

Despite widespread speculation the turbo diesel V8 will be replaced by a turbo diesel V6, Toyota is yet to reveal what will go under the bonnet of the next model.

Toyota has not built a turbo diesel V6 before; a turbo petrol V6 hybrid is expected for US models, but could also be made available globally.

In June 2019 CarAdvice interviewed Toyota Australia product planner, Bernard Nadal, who said: “You would see most brands are shifting down from V8s whether it be petrol or diesel configurations. It’s generally in the pursuit of greater efficiencies and to reduce CO2 emissions, so that’s the global trend.”

When asked this week for a comment about the end of production for the Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series, and what engine might power the next model, a statement from Toyota Australia said: “We are pleased to be experiencing strong demand for the (Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series), driven by recent increased domestic travel in off-road vehicles. We have no announcements to make today and will provide further information at the appropriate time.”

Sales of the current Toyota LandCruiser wagon were up by 23.8 per cent last month in a market that was down by 1.5 per cent.

The 200 Series is one of the longest serving Toyota LandCruiser generations.

The previous LandCruiser 100 Series ran for nine years from 1998 to 2007, the LandCruiser 80 series ran for seven years from 1990 to 1997, and the LandCruiser 60 Series ran for nine years from 1980 to 1989. The LandCruiser 50 Series that ran for 13 years from 1967 to 1980.

Only the LandCruiser 70 Series troop carrier and ute have had a longer production run, from 1984 to today.
