All-electric Honda e makes history in Germany

Funky city runabout wins German Car of the Year gong.

Honda’s first electric vehicle, the Honda e, has made history in Germany, awarded the prestigious German Car of the Year 2021 title.

It’s the first time a Japanese manufacturer has claimed the award, judged by a panel of German automotive journalists.

The panel reviews and tests new cars from five categories – Compact, Premium, Luxury, New Energy and Performance – against a number of criteria including driving, usability, market relevance and innovation.

The winners of the five categories are then pitted against each other to determine the overall Car of the Year.

The Honda e was the winner in the New Energy category, before going on to take out the overall award. Other category winners were Volkswagen Golf (Compact), Volkswagen ID.3 (Premium), Polestar 2 (Luxury) and BMW Alpina B3 (Performance).

“For Honda e to be the first Japanese car to be awarded German Car of the Year is a great honour and one we are incredibly proud to receive,” said Katsuhisa Okuda, CO & President of Honda Motor Europe.

“Customer and media response to the Honda e since it was first unveiled has been overwhelmingly positive. The Honda e is a perfect example of a product with a unique design, featuring cutting-edge technology and advanced intelligent connectivity to keep owners connected with their everyday life. We are very thankful for this award.”

In Europe, the Honda e is available with a choice of two electric motors, one offering 100kW, while a more powerful variant makes 113kW. Both make 315Nm. A 35.5kWh lithium-ion battery pack provides a range of around 220km, while recharging with a fast-charger, the battery can reach 80 per cent capacity in just 30 minutes.

The Honda e’s German Car of the Year honour continues a recent trend of electric vehicles taking the top gong. Last year, Porsche Taycan took out the honour while in 2019, it was the all-electric Jaguar i-Pace walking away with the award.
