2021 Toyota GR Yaris Rallye pricing announced: $53,900 drive-away

Dealers have been issued pricing for the Toyota GR Yaris Rallye, and it’s a pretty big gulp for a pint-sized hot hatch.

The 2021 Toyota GR Yaris Rallye edition will be priced from $49,500 plus on-road costs – or close to $53,900 drive-away – and is due in Australian showrooms by June next year.

This means it will come with approximately a $9000 price premium over the standard Toyota GR Yaris.

Dealers have been told the initial batch will be limited to 250 cars and available in pearl white only.

UPDATE: Since this article was published earlier today, Toyota Australia said the price for the GR Yaris Rallye has not been locked in, would not comment on the accuracy of the price listed in this story, and will confirm the RRP at the end of the month. Multiple dealer sources claim the price we quoted is accurate, however cautioned it could move up or down depending on manufacturer support. We will update this story if we receive any further clarification.

The RRP positions the Toyota GR Yaris Rallye edition between the Hyundai i30N and VW Golf GTI (circa $45,000) and the Volkswagen Golf R and Honda Civic Type R (circa $55,000).

The price will also make the Toyota GR Yaris Rallye one of the most expensive cars in the city-car class.

Toyota Australia is not due to confirm pricing until later this month, however dealers have already been informed.

To recap, last month the Japanese car maker launched the regular Toyota GR Yaris hot hatch at $49,950 plus on-road costs but, in the same breath, announced a special offer price of $39,950 drive-away for the first 1000 cars.

Those first 1000 examples sold out within one week, at which point Toyota increased the price to $44,950 drive-away for the next 100 cars. However, sales slowed to a rate of just 50 examples per month at the new, higher price.

The $44,950 drive-away deal for the base model Toyota GR Yaris may continue indefinitely now that Toyota has informed its dealer network the top-of-the-range (for now, at least) GR Yaris Rallye edition will cost from $49,500 plus on-roads.

A number of dealers have told CarAdvice this RRP will equate to about $53,500 to $53,900 drive-away (registration and stamp duty fees vary from state to state).

A number of Toyota dealer sources told CarAdvice they were already holding a number of orders for the GR Yaris Rallye edition since before pricing was announced.

When asked if some buyers who have placed deposits may now ask for a refund given the $53,500 to $53,900 drive-away price, one dealer said: “No way. Everyone wants it.”

As reported earlier today, there are divided opinions on the Toyota GR Yaris based on initial overseas test drives.

A popular YouTube page in Japan and China gave a lukewarm review – and even described it as a “warm hatch” rather than a hot hatch – while the UK’s Autocar magazine raved about it and wished they could issue six stars out of five for its road test.

It transpires, however, the YouTubers tested the basic Toyota GR Yaris whereas Autocar tested the equivalent of the Rallye edition, which gains limited-slip front and rear differentials, stickier Michelin tyres, a revised suspension tune, and lightweight alloy wheels.

The first shipments of the Toyota GR Yaris have already arrived, and Australian customers are beginning to take delivery.

The Australian media preview drive does not commence until the end of the month, when the regular GR Yaris will be tested on road and track – and pricing for the Rallye will be formally announced.
