2021 Toyota C-HR GR Sport: Australian debut due late November

Sport-look SUV confirmed for Australia, due this month.

Toyota has announced its first GR Sport model for Australia, the C-HR GR Sport.

Slotting in below full-fat GR cars the likes of the GR Supra and GR Yaris, the C-HR GR Sport will arrive in Australian showrooms in late November, offering the styling of full GR models without their enthusiast-oriented performance powertrains.

Based on the entry-level C-HR GXL 2WD, the GR Sport adds a raft of styling tweaks to set it apart from standard C-HR models, including a more aggressive front bumper (with a close resemblance to the GR Yaris), 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in low-profile tyres, and GR Sport badging.

Inside, upgrades include unique trim inlays, a sports steering wheel, GR-branded instruments and leather-accented sports seats.

Complementing the visual upgrades is “uprated suspension” which, while not officially confirmed, will likely bring a lower ride height and increased stiffness for a sharper drive.

Despite being based on the petrol-powered GXL 2WD, power in the GR Sport comes from the hybrid system used by the flagship Koba hybrid, mating a 1.8-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined power output of 90kW.

Drive is sent to the front wheels, and despite the six-speed manual pictured in the images, a CVT automatic is the sole transmission option available in Australia.

Pricing and specifications for the GR Sport have yet to be detailed, though we’d wager a list price before on-road costs of around $35,000, if the price difference between petrol- and hybrid-powered Koba variants is any indication.

The list of standard equipment will mirror that of the non-hybrid GXL 2WD, with highlights including an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with smartphone mirroring, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry and LED headlights.

Eight colours will be available to GR Sport buyers, with Crystal Pearl, Hornet Yellow and Feverish Red hues available with a contrasting black roof.

The 2021 Toyota C-HR GR Sport will arrive in local showrooms in late November.
