Electric and combustion engines, and an upmarket push, for Renault’s third-generation Kangoo – plus a more accessible new model for budget buyers.
Renault has revealed commercial and passenger versions of the 2021 Kangoo van in Europe, as well as introducing a new fleet-focussed van called the Express.
Replacing the previous Kangoo that’s been in production since 2011, the new Kangoo sits more comfortably with Renault’s current, more chiselled design themes externally, while also providing significant advancements beneath the surface.
Headlining the new design is a feature called Easy Side Access, which sees the B-pillar between the front and sliding side door removed on the passenger side. An open loading aperture, up to 1416mm wide, is then available with the front passenger seat folded flat, twice the size of the current model.
Renault has also detailed Easy Inside Rack, though didn’t provide any images or supporting info except to say the feature allows objects to be transported high, freeing up floor space.
For now details of the new models remain scarce, with a full, and much more detailed reveal scheduled for the first quarter of 2021. Interestingly, Renault has chosen not to show either vehicle from the rear, providing design sketches instead (click on any of the pictures in this post to launch a full gallery).
Among the available details, Renault has outlined that a fully-electric Kangoo Z.E will be available, as with the previous generation model. In the UK light commercial vehicle market, Renault represents almost half of all zero tailpipe emissions sales, between electric versions of the small Kangoo and large Master.
Details of the electric powertrain, outputs and battery capacity will form part of the next info release. Similarly, Renault hasn’t detailed the combustion engine range yet, only to say that petrol and diesel versions will be available with both manual and automatic transmissions.
Some of the confirmed new safety upgrades include Advanced Emergency Active Braking, Trailer Swing Assist and Brake Stability Control. A Permanent Rear View digital interior mirror is also available, using a rear camera feed in place of a traditional mirror for an uninterrupted view in fully-laden or bulkhead-equipped vehicles.
Within the available images, features including dual-zone climate control, push-button start and wireless mobile charging are shown, though these are less likely to be standard across the range.
The Kangoo will be available in two body lengths. Interior volumes are listed as 3.3 to 3.9 m³ in the standard version and from 4.2 to 4.9 m³ in the long version.
As with the current generation, the new Kangoo is expected to provide the basis for the next Mercedes-Benz Citan, and a new people mover version to be dubbed the T-Class.
Alongside the Kangoo, a new Renault Express van has also been revealed. Essentially, the Express arrives as a rebadged version of the new Dacia Dokker, although in this case the donor vehicle itself has yet to be officially unveiled.
Renault has form here too, with the previous Dokker rebranded as a Kangoo in some South American markets.
Positioned as something of an entry-level model of roughly the same size, but more affordable than the Kangoo, the Express will service fleet and budget-conscious buyers.
Express interior volume is rated at 3.3 to 3.7 m³, while safety features are dialled back slightly, but still include Rear-View Assist (rear camera), Blind Spot Warning, and front and rear parking sensors.
Both van and passenger versions of the Kangoo and Express will be available, but if the current range is any indication, expect a focus on the commercial versions locally.
A representative from Renault Australia confirmed with CarAdvice that the new Kangoo is slated for an Australian arrival, but the Express won’t be seen here. Additional details including specifications and launch timing will occur after the full reveal in 2021.
